"Life is like a tail told by an Idiot Full of Sound of Furies.. Signifies Nothing..."

Kerala Seeks New Dam

Study Finds Earthquakes Triggered by Dams……….

Kerala government adopted a resolution calling upon the Central and State governments to take steps for construction of a new dam at Mullaperiyar. The resolution, moved by Oommen Chandy, Chief Minister of Kerala, was adopted unanimously by the House after long time discussion. The major opposition LDF also called for new dam and they have formed human wall to enforce the dam demand. Lakhs, including people from different fields of the society joined hands on Wednesday to form a 208-km long human "wall".

Everyone in Kerala demands for new dam. They are afraid of an earth quake which will destruct the 116 years old dam. Each and every one, kids to grandpa know about the consequences of the coming disaster.

In Tamil Nadu, the Mullaperiyar dam issue has affected the people of Theni district bordering Kerala State. The issue is still burning in the district of Theni in Tamil Nadu. In Gudalur vehicles are not plying and shops are closed. The livelihood of thousands of women workers who go across to work in cardamom estates in Kerala has been hit badly. Reports show that daily supply of more than eighty six thousand litres of milk to Kerala from Tamil Nadu has been stopped.

While these issues are under serious discussion, I came across with an article which describes a study report “Earthquakes caused by dams: Reservoir-Triggered/Induced Seismicity”. According to the article, earthquakes can be induced by dams. Globally, there are over 100 identified cases of earthquakes that scientists believe were triggered by reservoirs. The most serious case may be the 7.9-magnitude Sichuan earthquake in May 2008, which killed an estimated 80,000 people and has been linked to the construction of the Zipingpu Dam.

In a paper prepared for the World Commission on Dams, Dr. V. P Jauhari wrote the following about this phenomenon, known as Reservoir-Induced Seismicity (RIS): "The most widely accepted explanation of how dams cause earthquakes is related to the extra water pressure created in the micro-cracks and fissures in the ground under and near a reservoir. When the pressure of the water in the rocks increases, it acts to lubricate faults which are already under tectonic strain, but are prevented from slipping by the friction of the rock surfaces."

Every dam site has its own geological characteristics; it is not possible to predict when and where earthquakes will occur. Many dams are being built in seismically active regions, including the Himalayas, Southwest China, Iran, Turkey, and Chile. International Rivers calls for a moratorium on the construction of high dams in earthquake-prone areas.

Meanwhile, here in Kerala is waiting for the consent from central environmental committee to build new dam. What will be the ultimate result of these discussions? Government reports should consider civilians and their interests.

Sehwag Made History............

This was the historical day in Indian Cricket. Star batsman Virender Sehwag slammed his maiden One Day International century against West Indies at Indore, surpassing his idol Sachin Tendulkar's unbeaten 200 against South Africa in Gwalior last year. He has created history by becoming the highest scorer ever in a one day innings and the second cricket player after Sachin.

On February 24, 2010, master blaster Sachin Tendulkar won the record in Gwalior. It took 260 ODIs for someone to eclipse Tendulkar's record, and that individual was Virender Sehwag.

The elegant opener faced 140 balls and hit 23 fours and six sixes in his marathon innings. Tendulkar had made his 200 not out from 147 balls. And through his victory, India crushed the West Indies by 153 runs in the fourth cricket one-dayer.
